MS or Multiple Sclerosis is an autoimmune condition that can cause a number of symptoms. It can be found in a number of different forms, and this can affect the care and support that an individual may need. For some, they may only need support during a flare-up, and for others, they may need to consider ongoing support from a Live in Care Gloucester company.
There are essentially three main types of MS, and these are:
- Relapsing
In this form of MS, the symptoms that are experienced by an individual can come in waves and these attacks, as they are known, can occur with the recurrence of symptoms or the addition of new ones. It is thought that about 85% of people with MS have this relapsing, remitting type.
- Primary Progressive
This form of MS affects about 15% of those who are diagnosed with MS and is where symptoms worsen over time. It tends to begin with issues with mobility that develop further. It is a type of MS that is usually diagnosed after the age of 40 and seems to affect men and women equally.
- Secondary Progressive
This form of MS can occur in those who are originally diagnosed with Relapsing-Remitting MS. It occurs when the relapses no longer occur, and the symptoms instead worsen over a period of time. The therapies that are used in Relapsing-Remitting MS are helping to prevent people from progressing onto this secondary progressive form of the condition.
