George the Sixth was never meant to be King. He was not the first in line to the throne. He was just going to sit quietly in the background supporting his brother Edward Viii. He was happy with his wife and his two daughters, one an aspiring horse trainer, the other a professional socialite and soon to be model. However, this was all turned upside down when a certain Mrs Simpson entered the King’s life. He abdicated his throne in favour of marrying his already divorced new love. So, the unconfident and stuttering Albert became George Vi.
However, the man stepped up and became a much-loved King of Britain, it’s Commonwealth and Dominions (he was also the last Emperor of India). His popularity was assured as he helped to steer the country through the Second World war with a quiet determination, giving hope to the nation.
He reigned for a few years after the war, but his health was failing. He was a prolific smoker. His funeral was televised, the first of its kind due to the popularity of the man. Many people believe that it was the Coronation of the new Queen Elizabeth that got the British public to start buying TV’s. It was, in fact, the death of King George Vi. It’s very true that you probably would have needed to have a good reception to get the pictures. This TV aerial repair Bristol based company would have been perfect for getting one installed.
